Be ready for bird flu with good biosecurity

Australia confirmed the detection of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in June 2026. Being ready now will give you the best chance of protecting your birds from bird flu should it spread to New Zealand.

Good poultry biosecurity is one of the most effective ways to help protect your flock from avian influenza. Whether you have a commercial operation or a backyard flock, these simple everyday practices can help reduce the risk of disease entering or spreading.

• HYGIENE: Wash your hands before and after handling birds.
• PROTECT: Prevent contact between your birds and wild birds. Make enclosures bird proof, using fencing or netting to keep wild birds away.
• FEED & WATER: Keep feed and water protected and do not use water sources that wild birds may frequent or could contaminate.
• FOOTWEAR: Wear dedicated footwear in poultry areas.
• CLEAN: Clean and disinfect equipment, footwear, clothing and poultry housing regularly.
• PPE: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling birds.
• ISOLATE: Keep new or returning birds separate before introducing them to your flock.
• REPORT: Report unusual illness or unexplained deaths in poultry to MPI immediately.
