Good poultry biosecurity is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of avian influenza entering or spreading within a flock.
- HYGIENE: Wash your hands before and after handling birds.
- PROTECT: Prevent contact between domestic birds and wild birds. Make enclosures bird proof, using fencing or netting to keep wild birds away.
- FEED & WATER: Keep feed and water protected and do not use water sources that wild birds may frequent or could contaminate.
- FOOTWEAR: Wear dedicated footwear in poultry areas.
- CLEAN: Clean and disinfect equipment, footwear, clothing and poultry housing regularly.
- PPE: Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling birds.
- ISOLATE: Keep new or returning birds separate before introducing them to the flock.
- REPORT: H5 bird flu is a notifiable animal disease. Report suspected disease to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline 1800 675 888.
It is important to advise your customers that if they notice unusual illness or increased bird deaths, not to wait. Early reporting helps protect their flock and Australia’s poultry industry.
